Most small business owners aren’t short on marketing advice. They’re drowning in it. Post on TikTok. Start a podcast. Run Google Ads. Try this new AI tool.
Here’s the thing. Channels change every year. What makes marketing work doesn’t. After decades in marketing, I’ve boiled it down to three things I look for in every business: Authority, Authenticity and Activity.
Get all three right and your marketing compounds. Miss one and you’ll feel like you’re spinning your wheels no matter how much you spend.
Authority is the evidence that you’re the real deal. Not what you say about yourself, but what everyone else can see when they look you up.
For a small business, that proof lives in a few places:
Buyers check all of it. According to BrightLocal’s 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey, 97% of consumers read reviews for local businesses, and 31% now want at least a 4.5-star rating before they’ll consider you.
And it’s not just Google anymore. The same survey found Digital Marketing for Small Business use for local recommendations jumped to 45%. AI tools pull answers from sources they trust. If your business has few reviews, thin website content and no presence beyond your own site, you’re invisible in those answers.
What to do this month: Take the five questions customers ask you most and answer each one on its own page or blog post. Be specific enough to be quotable. Vague content doesn’t get cited by anyone, human or AI.
People buy from people. That’s truer now more than ever, because the internet is filling up with generic, AI-written filler that all sounds the same.
Customers notice. Klaviyo’s 2026 consumer research found 32% of consumers say a brand using AI-generated content makes them trust it less.
That doesn’t mean you should avoid AI. Use it. But use it to amplify your real expertise, not replace it.
Authenticity looks like this:
That last one matters more than most owners think. BrightLocal found 50% of consumers view templated review responses negatively. A copy-and-paste “Thanks for your feedback!” tells people nobody’s home.
What to do this month: Swap every stock photo on your homepage for a real one. Then record one 60-second video answering a common customer question. Don’t overthink the production. Real beats polished.
This is where most small businesses fall apart. They build a decent website, post for three weeks, get busy, and go quiet for six months.
A dead social feed or a Google profile with no recent reviews sends a clear message: maybe this business isn’t around anymore.
Freshness matters to buyers. BrightLocal’s data shows 74% of consumers prioritize reviews written in the last three months. That batch of 5-star reviews from a few years ago isn’t doing the heavy lifting you think it is.
Activity means:
Consistency beats intensity. One solid post a week for a year will do more for you than 20 posts in January and nothing after.
What to do this month: Pick a posting schedule you can keep. Put it in your calendar like a client appointment and protect it.
Each one feeds the others. Activity builds Authority over time. Authenticity makes that Authority believable. And Authority makes your Activity worth paying attention to.
Here’s a quick gut check. Score your business from 1 to 10 on each A. Anything under 7 is where your next marketing dollar should go, before you spend a cent on ads.
Your website is usually the first place all three A’s show up, or don’t.
