According to a recent study that looked at data from 24 million consumer-to-business mobile phone calls, click-to-call commerce (where a consumer clicks an online link to connect with a person in real time) will contribute more than $1.0 trillion in consumer purchases in 2015. On top of that, the study found that across more than a dozen industries, between five percent and 25% of calls from mobile ads convert into a sale, appointment, or reservation. In fact, consumers who click-to-call directly from a mobile ad are four times more likely to purchase a product or service than a consumer who clicks to a web site from an online ad. “While e-commerce is a major growing trend in Canada, accounting for around six percent of retail spending, virtually all consumer purchases are influenced by smartphones,” says Ara Libarian, General Manager of Sales at Numero Uno Web Solutions. “The study also found that Millennials, those currently aged 21–34, are the most likely to click-to-call of any age group.”

In Canada, roughly 45.6% of mobile users ages 55 to 64 and 17.7% of those age 65 years of age or older use their smartphones every day; these numbers are projected to increase 20% by 2018. Baby Boomers do not respond to online ads the same way Millennials do, so mobile ads designed for Baby Boomers need to be short and simple, with a clear call-to-action, and linkable.
